Local artist has a lot on her easel
Kris Dubé The Times A love for history and mythology fuels the artistic mind of Lisa Iris. The local artist has a lot on her easel these days designing illustrations for sun tan lotion and perfume bottles, playing cards that feature mythological characters, CD covers for U.Kbased record labels, jewelry and wind chimes. And she does it all from her local home studio on her own time and has earned a living doing it for a number of years. "I've never punched a clock or timed myself," she said when asked how much time she spends per week working on her craft. As a graduate of York University's art-history program, Iris knows it's important for historical accuracy when it comes to depictions in her art and says a lot of time is spent in preparation for the first stroke of the brush. "I do a lot of research and it gives my work credibility," she said. Growing up locally as a stu- dent at Rose Seaton Public School and later attending Fort Erie Secondary School, Iris always knew she had a penchant for the arts and wanted to exercise her creativity well into her adulthood. "I thought this is a life worth living for me," she said. Iris feels it is still possible for an artist to be successful living in a

small town like Fort Erie and said that making key connections and networking with people on the Internet is a great way for aspiring artists to draw attention to their work. "I just made myself accessible," she said. Iris considers categorized her work as "fantasy art" but she is seasoned in many genres and says branching out to mainstream audiences has helped her career, undoubtedly. "I consider myself as a fine artist whose work is used commercially," she said. Visit her website at www.lisairis.bizland.com.

Bricks & Bouquets
If you have a brick or bouquet send it to editorial@forterietimes.com or phone 905-871-3100, ext. 210 and leave a message Brick To store owners who refuse to take part in the Royal Canadian Legion poppy campaigns. Brick To every driver who runs over squirrels and other wildlife and leaves their little, furry, dead bodies in the middle of the road. Three squirrels in three days were killed on Bowen Road between Central Ave and Jessie Street. It's not a secret that at this time of the year wildlife are desperately trying to get ready to survive the winter. Drivers need to drive slower and be alert. Brick To the person who gave a brick to the person who apparently leaves their little dog out in the rain and cold weather. It's apparent that you care enough to write a brick about this cruelty and neglect - the little dogs well being would be bet- ter served if you were to report the neglect or any abuse to the SPCA. In doing so you would be saving the dog from further cruelty and neglect. Bouquet To everyone who came out to a Remembrance Day ceremony on to celebrate and honour those who have given us everything we have today. We must make sure that we never forget. Bouquet To all the guys out there growing moustaches as part of Movember. It really is a fun way to contribute to a cause. Brick To the Buffalo Bills for certainly not giving their fans anything to "shout" about. Oh well, there's always next season. Bouquet To people who submit bricks and bouquets to the Times. We get great feedback about this part of our paper.
